Why the review tier existsA downgraded report does not just cost you a rewrite. It costs you a review cycle, and those are measured in weeks or months, not days. Having a CPA read the draft first is the difference between one submission and three.
WHY REPORTS COME BACK
Sometimes the gap is the experience. Just as often it is the reporting.
A report comes back for one of two reasons. Sometimes the experience is genuinely not there yet for the level claimed, and the answer is to keep working and report it honestly as you go. Just as often the experience is there and the write-up does not show it, because the reviewer never saw you do the work. All they have is what is on the page, assessed against a level rather than against how demanding your job was.
Which level you should be reporting depends on where you are in your experience. Early on you should be reporting Level 0s and 1s, because that is the foundation your progression is measured against. Level 0 and Level 1 are good reports, and you do not need a Level 2 everywhere. What matters is that the levels rise over your reporting period. The part candidates get stuck on is the last step, when the work is ready for Level 2 but the write-up does not show it.

Tasks that are not complex, often data entry and processing. Level 0 is not a bad report. It is junior work, reported accurately.

Where the work supports a Level 2, the distance from Level 1 is almost entirely phrasing.
Phrasing is not the only thing that goes wrongCandidates working through PER on their own make bigger mistakes than a weak sentence. They report their experience against the wrong competencies. They describe their examples in a form that cannot be credited, however good the underlying work was. They miss steps and deadlines the process depends on, and they never properly assess the experience they already have, so they cannot see what is missing until somebody else tells them. Every one of those is found weeks or months later, by a reviewer, and the clock has been running the whole time.

ABOUT PER AND PERT
QDoes this work for both EVR and PPR?▾
Yes. Whether you are in the Experience Verification Route or a Pre-Approved Program, your reports are assessed against the same competency levels and downgraded for the same reasons. The templates and phrasing cover both, and the differences between the routes are addressed directly rather than glossed over.
QWhy do reports get downgraded when the work was real?▾
Because the reviewer assesses what is on the page, not what happened at your desk. A Level 1 report describes what you did. A Level 2 report shows what you identified, how you analysed it, what you concluded and what you recommended. Most downgrades are not a shortfall in experience. They are a shortfall in what the write-up made visible.
QWill this help with enabling competencies?▾
Yes. All five enabling competencies have to be written up, and they need a different shape from the technicals: what you decided and why, not just the situation you were in. There are separate templates and dedicated breakdown videos for the enabling questions.
QHow long does a review cycle take with CPA Canada?▾
Long enough that it is worth avoiding a second one. Review timelines vary by province and by time of year, but a downgraded report does not simply cost you a rewrite, it costs you another wait. That is the real argument for getting a report right the first time rather than iterating with your reviewer.
ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
QHow does the expert review work?▾
You submit your draft reports to us before they go to CPA Canada. A Canadian CPA on our team reads them against the same standards a reviewer applies and tells you exactly where you need more depth to secure your Level 2s. You then revise and submit officially, having already had the problems pointed out. The tier covers up to two reports, each with eight technical and five enabling competencies, and unused marking credits only expire once you have passed PERT.
QWhat is the difference between the two packages?▾
The lessons, templates, phrasing bank and passing examples are identical. PER With Marking adds review by the GCPA team before you submit. If you are confident assessing your own writing against the levels, PER Without Marking is enough. If you have already had a report downgraded, the marking is the part that changes the outcome.
QHow long do I have access?▾
Up to 24 months. Practical experience takes time to accumulate, and your reporting has to last as long as your experience does. Access ends when your experience is signed off, 24 months after enrolment, or in December 2028 when the current PER program ends, whichever comes first. Updated materials reach you throughout that window.
QI am internationally trained. Does PER still apply to me?▾
Usually yes, though the route differs. Thirty months of prescribed practical experience applies, but internationally certified accountants can often apply for an exemption based on experience already earned at home or in Canada, and generally do not report through PERT in the same way. Confirm your position with your provincial body before you buy anything.
QWill this work if I am reporting under the 2027 program?▾
No, and you should not buy this package if that is your situation. The current program runs to December 2028 and these materials are built for its requirements. The 2027 CPA Professional Program has its own practical experience rules, and we are building a separate course for it. QCan you write my reports for me?▾
No, and you should be wary of anyone who offers to. Your reports have to describe experience you actually had, and they are verified by a mentor and a reviewer. What we do is show you how to write up the work you genuinely did so that the judgement in it is visible and credited.
