Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Becoming a CPA

Q How long does it take to become a CPA in Canada?
For most candidates, two to three years after the degree. You complete the CPA Professional Education Program while working, sit the Common Final Examination, and report 30 months of prescribed practical experience. The experience runs alongside the modules rather than after them, so the three requirements overlap.
Q What is CPA PEP, and what is inside it?
CPA PEP is the graduate-level program between your degree and the CFE. It is Core 1 and Core 2, two electives of your choosing, and then Capstone 1 and Capstone 2, which prepare you for the exam itself. Each module ends in its own examination.
Q Do I need an accounting degree to start?
Not necessarily. You need a recognised undergraduate degree plus a specific set of prerequisite courses. If your degree is in something else, those prerequisites can usually be completed through a bridging program before you are admitted to PEP.
Q What is PER, and when should I start reporting?
PER is the practical experience requirement: 30 months of relevant, progressively senior work, reported through PERT and signed off by a mentor. Start reporting from your first qualifying day. Candidates who leave it until the end are the ones who lose months they had already worked.
Q What is the CFE, and what is the pass rate?
The Common Final Examination is written across three days: a long strategic report on Day 1, one case in depth on Day 2, and several shorter cases across every technical area on Day 3. Historically the pass rate for first-time writers sits around 70 to 75 per cent, among candidates who have already cleared Core, the electives and the capstones.
Q What happens with the 2027 CPA Professional Program?
A new program launches in January 2027 and the current PEP is scheduled to end in December 2028. If you can finish under the current program, that is the recommendation. If you cannot, transitioning is normal and there is a defined path across.
